Pacific Partnership 2012 in North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Pacific Partnership is an annual deployment of forces from the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy (USN), in cooperation with regional governments and military forces, along with humanitarian and non-government organizations.
The deployment was conceived following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, as a way to improve the interoperability of the region's military forces, governments, and humanitarian organisations during disaster relief operations, while providing humanitarian, medical, dental, and engineering assistance to nations of the Pacific, and strengthening relationships and security ties between the nations.
The deployment is typically based around an amphibious warfare vessel or hospital ship of the USN's Pacific Fleet. Other nations regularly contribute to the deployment; the Australian Defence Force has provided assets since the first deployment in 2006, and seven nations, along with other branches of the United States Armed Forces, US government agencies, and non-government organizations, were involved in Pacific Partnership 2011.

On January 31ST 2012, the Governor of North Sulawesi, Mr. Sinyo Sarundajang, is invited to attend the Mid Planning Conference Pacific Partnership 2012 (PP12) in San Diego, CA. I am extremely excited when I read the news because for one, I am a Manadonese and my husband is a U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer. Partnership like this is amazing because their mission is humanitarian, friendship and strengthened the relationship between the nations.

So, Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) departed Naval Station San Diego May 3, beginning its part in Pacific Partnership 2012, a four-and-a-half month humanitarian and civic assistance mission to Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. Mercy was scheduled to depart May 1, but a mechanical problem delayed the ship's departure for two days.

Pacific Partnership 2012 is a mission that will take medical, dental, veterinary, engineering and civic assistance projects to Southeast Asia and Oceania. Pacific Partnership missions build on relationships that have been developed during previous missions, for example Mercy's participation in international relief efforts following the December 2004 tsunami that struck Southeast Asia, and Mercy's 2006, 2008 and 2010 humanitarian and civic assistance deployments to the region.

USNS Mercy arrived in Manado, North Sulawesi, on May 31 2012 as part of a two-week visit to Indonesia and to participate in the PP12. The people of Manado were so excited to see the big ship arrived in their city and the mission it carries. They are forever grateful and loved the Mercy and her crew :)

Manado is the "Land of swaying coconut tree and smiling people", because we have a lot of coconut trees, LOL, we love people, we are friendly, happy, love to eat and outgoing people. Manado's culture got influenced a lot by the Dutch, Spain, Portuguese, Japanese and British cultures. All of those mixed cultures influences shows in our ethnicity, foods, languages, names, also religion. We are the largest Christian's region in Indonesia and so far our city has been living in peace and harmony with everyone.

This is the summary of what they did that I got from http://www.cpf.navy.mil/news.aspx/030010 but I am posting some pictures of their missions from various sources.

"Pacific Partnership 2012 (PP12) completed its first mission port in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, June 15. Aboard the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), the PP12 team of more than 1,200 crew spent 15 days traveling between Manado and the three islands of Sangihe, Talaud, and Siau.
The multinational, multi-organizational crew of host and partner nations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) worked in the fields of medical and dental, veterinarian, civil engineering and subject matter expert exchanges. They also conducted community service in the areas of sports and recreation, donated items and band performances.
"I believe the key to our success was our ability to bring people together in a focused effort," said Capt. James Morgan, PP12 Mission Commander. "We have accomplished a great deal in two weeks time."
The mission participated in 11 major subject matter expert exchanges involving more than 1,000 Indonesian specialists, allowing this year's mission to continue building on established best practices for all the countries involved.
According to Morgan, nearly 200 surgeries were conducted; four major engineering projects stood up; over 2,300 livestock and pets received veterinary care; and, over 9,000 local citizens received medical evaluations and treatments in Manado and on the outer islands.

The crew also conducted cultural exchanges and community service with local citizens by playing sports, reading with children, transporting donated supplies, and conducting 10 music concerts and clinics performed by the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band.

The goal of PP12 is to take part in a humanitarian and civic assistance mission that brings together U.S. military and civilian personnel, host and partner nations, non-government organizations and international agencies to build stronger relationships and develop disaster response capabilities.

"Pacific Partnership in Indonesia brought together the very best military, humanitarian, governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations that our countries and the international community as a whole have to offer," Morgan said. "I couldn't be more proud."
Working together as an integrated team and at the invitation of the Indonesian government, Indonesia military and civil service personnel worked alongside the partner nations of Australia, Canada, France, Malaysia, and the United States; the NGOs of Global Grins, Hope World Wide, Johns Hopkins University Medicine, Latter Day Saints Charities, Project Handclasp, Project Hope, Univ. of California San Diego Pre-Dental Society, University of Hawaii Schools of Engineering and Nursing, and World Vets; and, Joint and Interagency teams from the United States Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy, Departments of State, Justice, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Approximately 70 professional civilian mariners also ensured the safety and navigation of the USNS Mercy.
The remaining Pacific Partnership 2012 mission ports include the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. Through active engagement with host nation officials and militaries, subject matter expert exchanges, civil action projects and medical exchanges, the mission will continue to build the regional partnerships and collective abilities needed to respond to natural disasters.

Sponsored by the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet and now in its seventh year, Pacific Partnership is the largest annual humanitarian civic assistance mission in the Asia-Pacific Region."

Thank you very much for everyone who volunteered and involved with the PP12. You did great things for the people of North Sulawesi and Indonesia in general. You have changed many lives, perspective and bond a strong partnership and friendship of the nations.

Thank you for all of your donations, money, energy, time, work, help, talents, sacrifices (including and especially) for leaving your families for months due to the deployment (Thank You USNS Mercy's families).

I wished many people would realize the prize these families must endure during deployment. I also wished that many people would understand and realized that the military is not all about war, they are doing many humanitarian efforts all over the world just like this one. For once in your life, set your political view aside, and see it from a different perspective. I am sure the people that they helped would love to tell you what they did and how it changed their lives forever.
We hope to see you again in Indonesia! Terima Kasih, Sampai Jumpa Lagi (Thank You, Til We Meet Again)!

Unchained Melody

I watched "Drop Dead Diva" last night and I fell in love with the man who played the piano and sang my all time favorite, "Unchained Melody."
Its a beautiful song, music and the words are just so romantic.

Anyway, let me introduce you to Mr. Andy Davis.
The man who played the piano with a voice of an angel.
Check him out, this is his official website:

KOKO, the Gorilla

Have you heard of Koko, the gorilla? I was browsing some videos in YouTube and found some videos of Koko. She is a genius gorilla, so cute and a fast learner. I also admire the people who taught her everything she know with dedication, passion, patient and love. I do not believe in evolution, but I do believe in God who created everything beautiful. Koko is one of His masterpiece and human has the ability to teach animals and to care for them.

"A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel."
Proverbs 12:10

"Koko (born July 4, 1971) is a female gorilla who, according to Francine "Penny" Patterson, is able to understand more than 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language, and understand approximately 2,000 words of spoken English.
As with other ape language experiments, the degree to which Koko masters these signs has been controversial, as has been the degree to which such mastery demonstrates language abilities.
Koko was born at San Francisco Zoo and has lived most of her life in Woodside, California, although a move to a sanctuary on Maui, Hawaii, has been planned since the 1990s. Koko is short for the name Hanabiko (花火子 lit. "fireworks child"?)in Japanese, a reference to her date of birth, the Fourth of July.
Although not unique, Koko is one of the few non-humans known to keep pets. She has cared for several cats over the years and Koko's relationship with All Ball was featured in the 1987 book Koko's Kitten (Scholastic Press, ISBN 0-590-44425-5), which was written by Patterson. In the book, Patterson reported that in the summer of 1984 Koko asked her for a cat. Koko selected a gray male Manx from a litter of abandoned kittens and named him "All Ball". This breed is unusual in that it has no tail. Patterson wondered whether that influenced Koko's choice. Patterson wrote that Koko cared for the kitten as if it were a baby gorilla.
In December of that same year, All Ball escaped from Koko's cage and was hit and killed by a car. Later, Patterson said that when she signed to Koko that All Ball had gone, Koko signed "Bad, sad, bad" and "Frown, cry, frown, sad". Patterson also reported later hearing Koko making a sound similar to human weeping. Drawing upon this incident, Patterson argues that non-human species can have human-like emotions.
In 1985, Koko was allowed to pick out two new kittens from a litter to be her companions. The animals she chose, later named "Lipstick" and "Smokey", were also Manxes like All Ball.
Though he was not a pet of Koko's in the same way her cats were, the Gorilla Foundation also briefly played home to a male green-winged macaw of mysterious origin who had been found inhabiting the grounds and feeding on the loquat trees. Initially frightened of the parrot, Koko named him "Devil Tooth", "devil" presumably coming from his being mostly red, and "tooth" for his fierce-looking white beak; the human staff adjusted the name to "Devil Beak", and ultimately to "DB". (Personal communication)"
(Source: Wikipedia)
Have you seen the movie, "Rise of the planet of the Apes?", I thought only in a movie that an ape could learn the sign language and all, but Koko proved me wrong. I think Koko inspired that movie because its location is in San Francisco and Koko was born in San Francisco Zoo LOL.
Speaking of San Francisco Zoo, I visited the San Francisco's Zoo last Sunday and I was actually disappointed. The Zoo is big and clean, but there were not a lot of animals to see, most of the big cats were hiding and those animals looked lonely and sad.

Yours Truly in SF Zoo lol

Anyway, please Google about Koko and you will be amazed of this beautiful creature. These are some of her videos that I love but she has a lot more videos in YouTube, please check her out and help spreading the word of how to teach and love the animals. They deserved our help, care and love!

P.S  6:27, I do not believe in Evolution, just to be clear lol, I do believe in God's creation :)

Save the gorillas

A Little Reminder

One of my biggest turned off when I talked with other Christians is this statement,
"You are going to hell because _____!"
or
Have you heard a testimony about A,B,C who went to hell and back? They saw D,E,F in hell!
SERIOUSLY??

"For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." 2 Timothy 4:3-4

The ONE and ONLY Judge is God himself!
The ONE and ONLY,
Do not forget that.

Yes, we are all sinners,
Yes, God loves the sinners and hates the sin,
Yes, we all will be judged someday based on what we did, good and bad (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Yes, ALL of US!

I do believe that there is a heaven and hell,
I do believe in ONE God,
I also believe in his WORD of TRUTH.

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Please, do not try to be the judge,
We could be the helper.
Please, do not try to be the judge,
We could be the listener.
Please, do not try to be the judge,
We could be the prayer buddy.
Please, do not try to be the judge,
We could be the witness of God's love and TRUTH.

"And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:7

We do not have to compromise to be a good Christian,
We do not have to agree with everything to be a good Christian,
We just have to do God's commandment,

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." Matthew 7:1-5

Preaching the "go to hell" sermon with a heart of condemning,
"I know best" attitude,
"I know better than you" mindset,
"I am more holy than you" mentality,
will NOT work.

People tend to forget that we are all sinners, (Romans 3:23)
We just sin differently, but a sin is a sin!
We sin everyday with our hearts, thoughts, actions and words.
Telling other people that they are going to hell without knowing what's going on in their lives at that moment is just careless and loveless.

I am not trying to tell you to keep sinning.
NO!
But, I am trying to tell you that there is a way out and help for your problems.

I am not trying to tell you to not reminding other people when they are doing something wrong.
NO!
But, I am trying to tell you that LOVE and compassion should be your foundation in heart, not anger, not judgment, not condemning, not "I know better" mentality, etc.

"Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;" Luke 6:37

Wondering why you are a Christian and never bring any of your "non Christian" friends to church or know Jesus?
Wondering why the only people you hang out with and bring to church are those who already are Christians?
Because you are too comfortable in your own "I am so holy" bubble,
that you could not stand talking to others who are struggles with real life problems.
Because you are sick of their sins and forget the person,
Because you want them to do what you want according to your time,
Because instead of trying to help them to know and understand God,
You ordered them around to seek God and condemning what they do wrong without giving them a way out.

Pray and Fast and Read the Bible,
are very true and helpful,
if you are a Christian.
Telling other people to do those stuff while they do not even know who Jesus is all about,
is not helping them,
it makes them confused, mad and stay away from you (as far as they could).

My point is we must live a life that shows Jesus daily,
we must also show others that we messed up in life,
but we find a way out through our faith-hope-love in Jesus.
We draw the line of what is OK with us and what is not OK with us,
we don't need to compromise, but we find a boundary that we both respected of each other.
Provide the help that they need to find God and a way out.

Last but not least,
I do believe in heaven and hell,
We will go to one destination if we do not find the right path and not making the right decision.

Is it always easy to follow Jesus?
NO
Sometimes HE is silent but He never forsaken nor forgotten me,
ever!
That is my strength to survive in this life and His promise to me,
that He will be with me to the very end. (Matthew 28:20)

Lindsay

Pet Of The Month

If you are a dog lover, pet owner or an animal lover in general, you will spend hours just watching your pet doing tricks or even just staring at their eyes makes you happy.

Our apartment did this fun event, "Pet Of The Month" contest, and we immediately think of our darling companion, LUKE, the dog. We uploaded his picture to compete with other pets in the apartments (dogs, cats, bunnies, etc) and we did a campaign to let our voice heard and invited people to vote for Luke.

So, people started voting for Luke and for a while Luke was behind Lulu the bunny and some other dogs. Then..miracles happened..LOL..Luke started to catch up!

And..the winner is (drum roll)

Hero

"The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation"
-C.S. Lewis-

I am currently reading the book, "Fearless" by Eric Blehm, it is a story of heroism, life, love for the country, family, struggling, what faith can do, hope in the middle of a crisis, and what one man could do to change the world.

I am a sucker for military stories, history, heroism, any true stories, inspirational stories, hope and faith in the middle of a crisis. I love to read great stories about great people who deserve to be called a "HERO".

A hero for me is an ordinary person who did an extraordinary things in this world. A person who change other people's lives to a better one. A person who saved other people's lives. A person who is known because of their unselfish act, undying love, faithfulness and courageous action in their lifetime. I am very picky to call someone a hero, unless that person is a real hero. It takes sacrifice and unselfish act of love to put your life in front of other people so that they may live. It takes courage and faithfulness to do something to change other people's lives. It takes patient, love and hope to believe that there is something I could do more to help others and  not afraid to actually do it.

In this era, people use the word "hero" too generous and a lot of people get confused with that word because those who deserves that word do not get the appreciation they deserved or did not get recognized the way they should have been because of political reasons, confused society and lack of knowledge. Read more of their stories and you will realize what they sacrificed in a regular day just to saves, protects and serves us. I am not talking just about the military people, but also other law enforcement agencies. Yes, it is a job and they chose to work that specific job. But, they are real people just like you and I. They have hobbies, weakness and strength, family and friends. The difference is they are brave enough to work in that line of duty.
Imagine if nobody wants to do it. Nobody is brave enough to sign the paper that prioritize other people above their own lives (and their loved ones). Somebody needs to do it, so that this world could be a better and safe place for our kids to enjoy.

Many of those who died in war are very young and they left a lot of young lives behind, their children. It is important for these kids to understand that we, the citizens, appreciate their fathers and mothers sacrifices. Many of us do not even know their names, but for these children, they lost the one person that they loved the most so that you and I could live a better life. Please make sure that these children knows that you appreciate and proud of their parents.

These heroes might be young, but they have offered and gave the best any human being could offer to another human being, their very own LIFE. It is not how we die that defined us as a human being, it is how we have lived our lives. Be a hero to someone today! Thank a hero today! Appreciate a hero today and do the same tomorrow, the next day and so on.

Who is your hero today? May it be your mom or dad, brother or sister, friend, teacher, or maybe he or she is a stranger to you but their unselfish act makes them a hero to yourself. The question is, have you told them that they are your hero and thank them? :)

My grandpa :)

These are some of the websites to appreciates them:

"The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example."
